In March 2020, TRANCE MISSION releases Le Pendu, their fifth album and first in over two decades. Fresh from a rapturous reception in a packed Yoshi’s Jazz Club, Oakland, this new trio edition of the San Francisco Bay Area “4th World” band in 2020 offers the dynamic confluence of three evolved multi-instrumentalists & composers at the top of their game. Founders Beth Custer and Stephen Kent have been there since meeting in San Francisco in the early 90’s, while Peter Valsamis started playing with them only after their 3 studio albums were complete, joining in 1997 to play on the 4th, the live concert recording, A Day Out of Time.

Le Pendu, created in northern and southern California as the three reignited over the last several years, is a muscular and tasty aural journey through that group process and, with this unique and eclectic world of sounds, unlike any other. The combo of the driving multi-phonic tones of Stephen Kent’s didgeridoos, together with the varied, flexing and dexterous drumming of Petr Valsamis sets the stage for Emmy award-winning composer Beth Custer’s brilliance on the entire clarinet family. Her soulful, soaring melodies one moment give way to funky, phat riffs the next, dueling with Kent’s rhythmic growls and kickass grooves. Meanwhile the layering of ambient percussion, the swinging bass lines and the spare, vital use of electronic atmospheres underpin the arrangements and keep the band true to their global roots in both ancient and contemporary musical worlds. With engineer Valsamis at the controls throughout the project, Le Pendu proves that this TRANCE MISSION has what it takes to dive in to the current with a fresh and vibrant urban tribal approach that is as vital now as ever!

This is a very special album. One of my all time favorites. Drums and percussion are actually soothing. Mark Seelig has an exotic eastern sound. Nobody does it like these 2 guys. Well done!
